James Mallord William Turner, R.A. (1775-1851) was probably the most prolific landscape artist that England has known. As well as sketching virtually the whole of the coastal areas of England, Wales and Scotland, he travelled extensively throughout Britain to illustrate cities, market towns, cathedral towns and country estates. His travels also took him all over the Continent but his sketch books shown mainly the Germanic States, Austria, Italy and Switzerland; sketches which were used in his large allegorical and mythological paintings.
